The residence is organized to allow living and entertaining spaces to take advantage of the spectacular Pacific coast scenery. Stringent design criteria and planning regulations subject to public design reviews by the Architectural Review Board, California Coastal Commission and Monterey County Planning Commission had to be met before approval was granted.
A concept of living between private gardens and the ocean frontage with its scenery beyond determined the location of the house on the site.
All major spaces have views to the coastline and Monterey Bay beyond. Entertaining spaces open to a large veranda on the public side of the residence for panoramic views. Private exterior entertaining spaces and terraced gardens are developed in the zone between the access street and the residence. These protected areas and gardens can be entered directly from an interior circulation gallery that joins all major spaces.
Exterior materials of sea fossil limestone, copper roofs and bronze clad windows and doors give the project a timeless quality. Interior spaces have ample natural light and feature large expanses of operable glass.
